Billionaire Justin Hemmes has splurged a record $17 million for a beachfront rig in Byron Bay.

The 50-year-old Sydney pub baron bought the two-bedroom property on Belongil Beach in Byron Bay in an off-market sale. The Sydney Morning Herald informed.

It was previously owned by Stephen Hains, son of billionaire businessman and horse breeder David Hains.

Hains bought the property through trust in 2012 for $2.77 million and used it as a vacation getaway.

Hemmes had acquired the house just five years earlier, when he purchased the nearby Newport Arms, a historic hotel located on the shores of Pittwater.
