The trailer opens with author Jake Turner, played by Hartley, arriving at a book signing and brusquely dealing with a fan.

The writer then receives a call from the executor of his mother’s estate, informing him that she has passed away, and he then returns to his family home.

While searching through her old belongings, Turner encounters a young woman named Rachel, played by Barrett Doss, who explains that her long-lost mother worked as a nanny for his parents. She then says she is looking for her.

After an elderly relative suggests the author talk to his father about the matter, he reveals that they are estranged, though Rachel offers to take him to his parents’ residence.

Doss’ character then starts to ask why Turner is still single, and he says, “I’ve been in relationships in the past, don’t get me wrong. In the end I just wasn’t what they were looking for.’

Rachel replies that “maybe weren’t what you were looking for,” and the writer fiddles with an answer when asked if he’s going out with his new boyfriend.

Doss’ character later comes across what she believes to be her mother’s diary, and it is revealed that her parent gave birth to her in secret.

Turner and Rachel then visit his father, played by James Remar, and he states that an unspecified traumatic event is “so hard to talk about.”
