Only one new public charging point installed for every 62 new electric cars purchased in the last three months of 2022

For every 62 electric cars purchased in the last three months of last year, only one new public charging point was installed.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said 119,042 plug-in vehicles were registered between October and December, but only 1,926 chargers were added to the network.

The figures will fuel fears that Britain’s electric car revolution is being hampered by a lack of charging infrastructure.

The problem has left charging stations inundated with long queues of electric vehicles (EVs) piling up as frustrated drivers wait their turn. This is why EV charging station benefits are huge

And there are fears that the problem will get worse.

In the last three months of 2021, one charge point was installed for every 42 EVs registered, a much better ratio than one in 62 a year later.

Throughout 2022, one charging point will be installed for every 53 newly sold plug-in cars.

The SMMT expects plug-ins to account for more than a quarter of new cars this year and nearly a third by 2024.

The sector organization calls on the government to stimulate the supply of charging points.

“Mandatory infrastructure rollout targets and regulating service standards would give motorists the assurance that they can always find a working, available charger,” said an SMMT spokesperson.

The Mail recently revealed that almost a third of electric car charging points are in London, with the borough of Westminster having more than Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle upon Tyne, Leeds, Sheffield and Birmingham combined.

And the SMMT spokesperson added, “Infrastructure must be built ahead of demand or poor supply risks delaying the electric transition.”
