Jurgen Klopp has paid tribute to American soccer fans with a message in honor of July 4, a message that will only fuel speculation about a possible German takeover of the USMNT.
DailyMail.com columnist Tim Howard this week promised he would fly to Spain to persuade the former Liverpool manager to take over if US Soccer replaces Gregg Berhalter.
Berhalter is under immense pressure after the U.S. national team was eliminated from the Copa America, just two years shy of a home World Cup.
Klopp has not responded to calls to take charge, but he did tease fans with a social media post on Thursday.
“It’s the perfect day to reflect on my travels with Liverpool to the States… we had a great time and the American fans are excited! Happy 4th of July,” Klopp wrote alongside a selection of snaps from pre-season tours.
The photos showed Klopp training at both Yankee Stadium and Fenway Park, taking selfies with fans and signing autographs.
The German is currently enjoying a break from coaching after leaving Liverpool at the end of last season.
But Howard is confident he can convince him to lead the U.S. national team to the 2026 World Cup on home soil.
“I think I can make a very convincing argument,” the legendary goalkeeper wrote. “I will fly to Spain personally. I mean it… If we were at his villa in Spain, I think I could lure him here. 100 percent.’
Klopp, who recently turned 57, has ruled out ending his nine-year career on Merseyside.
“There is no way I will stop working altogether,” the German said. “But I don’t see myself continuing at the same pace as before for the time being.”
