Jurgen Klopp insists a fight for Kylian Mbappe would be a ‘surprise’… as the Liverpool boss admits wages and signing-on fee required would be ‘tricky for a number of top clubs’

Jurgen Klopp has admitted he would be ‘surprised’ if ‘all the top clubs’ were after Kylian Mbappe.

Mbappe looks set to finally leave PSG this summer after years of speculation about a move to Real Madrid once the summer transfer window opens.

But the striker’s move to Spain is not a foregone conclusion as several sides are still able to compete for the man described as the hottest free agent of all time.

Liverpool have shown interest in the Frenchman in the past and were one of the sides keen to sign him when he left Monaco for PSG in 2017, and would at least remain in discussions as a possible destination for Mbappe next season.

However, Red boss Jurgen Klopp appears to be downplaying the chances of that happening. Ahead of his side’s match against Brentford this weekend, the German stressed that it would be difficult for a number of clubs to strike a deal for the 25-year-old.

The forward has long been linked with a move away from PSG and is set to leave as a free agent

“Of course I’m not involved in that, but I can tell you that I would be surprised if all the top clubs did that,” Klopp said. ‘The top clubs I know, it will be difficult for most of them. Wages, application fees.”

Klopp will not play for Liverpool next season but is keen to leave the club in good form as they continue to compete on four fronts this season.

With his team top in the Premier League, they are also in the Carabao Cup final and remain in the FA Cup and Europa League.

He had previously refused to rule out the possibility of Mbappe joining the club, suggesting he could be ‘surprised’ by a deal.

It has been reported that he is demanding a pay package of £60 million per year and a sign-on bonus of £107 million

“I can say that I think he is a very good player, but the financial circumstances do not suit us at all,” he told Sky Germany in August. ‘I wouldn’t want to spoil the story now, but as far as I know there’s nothing going on.

‘It could be that someone else from the club is preparing something and wants to surprise me. That hasn’t happened in the eight years I’ve been here. That would be the first time.’

According to The Mirror, Mbappe is demanding £60 million a year in wages and a £107 million sign-on bonus to join his next club.
