Jurgen Klopp praises Liverpool’s response to VAR reverse against Wolves after admitting he was ‘worried’ they would lose ‘control’ as they have in previous games this season

  • Liverpool beat Wolves 2-0 at home on Wednesday but had a goal disallowed
  • Darwin Núñez, 23, scored for Liverpool in the 65th minute but was disallowed
  • Boss Jurgen Klopp disagreed with the decision but praised his team’s response.

Jurgen Klopp has praised Liverpool’s ability to bounce back after their opening goal against Wolves was disallowed by VAR.

Darwin Núñez opened the scoring for Liverpool in the 65th minute of their Premier League clash with Wolves. However, his goal was disallowed.

Referee Paul Tierney disallowed the goal after consulting the pitchside monitor and realizing that Diogo Jota had fouled Max Kilman in the build-up.

Klopp disagreed with the decision as there was “no fault” in his eyes. However, he said that he was impressed with the way his side reacted mentally.

The German manager said that Liverpool were guilty of drawing and losing games in similar circumstances in the past because of how they reacted.

However, Liverpool won their clash with Wolves 2-0 thanks to goals from Virgil van Dijk and Mohammed Salah.

Speaking about the disallowed goal, Klopp said: “I saw it back, I don’t think it’s a foul, in slow motion everything looks like a foul.” But reacting like that is important to us, tonight is exactly what we needed in a fantastic environment.”

Liverpool responded well to the incident and scored just seven minutes later thanks to a header from Van Dijk.

Salah then added to the Liverpool tally: he scored their 20th goal of the season, making it six years in a row at the club where he has reached that milestone.

The win, and a fourth successive clean sheet in the Premier League, moved the Reds to sixth in the table, six points behind fourth-placed Spurs with one game to go.

Speaking about the game as a whole, Klopp said: “I thought the whole story of the game is important to us.” I think we did a lot of good things in the first half, we played how we had to play.

“We didn’t create as many clear chances, the best one was probably Harvey Elliott’s header that missed.

‘Second part, around the disallowed goal we already increased the pressure and this kind of thing.

“I think everyone saw the (disallowed) goal a couple of times ago and when they see it in slow motion, they see the contact at that moment, but I still think it was a goal, but that’s not important anymore.”

The players have no repetition and for them it is a clear objective, of course. So you have to react.

“I wasn’t worried, but of course you see it, how the guys react, and the reaction was really good.”

‘Then you forced the goal and then the second goal was an exceptional play: a really good counterattack, every pass was perfect.

Then we checked it again. So, it was a good performance from us and really important. And, of course, again a clean sheet, which is extremely useful. These are all positives for us, all good.’

Wolves only had one shot on goal and boss Julen Lopetegui admitted his team didn’t deserve anything from the game.

“It was frustrating because we didn’t get anything here, but we didn’t deserve to get anything,” he said.

‘Maybe in the first half, but in the second half we didn’t keep up and when they scored, of course, it was more difficult.

“We lost a game, it’s a shame, but we have to change our mentality very quickly, because in three days we have another important game (at home against Tottenham). But this was not a good game for us.
