Jurgen Klopp praised the emphatic victory which he says has changed Liverpool’s mood ahead of their clash with the best team in the world.

A hat-trick from substitute Mo Salah, added to a confidence-boosting attack by Darwin Nunez, were the standout moments of a 7-1 Rangers striker, forcing Liverpool to need a point from their last two games to reach the knockout stages of the Champions League reach.

More immediately, however, Liverpool will face Manchester City on Sunday and while Klopp was unwilling to make any bold predictions about what could happen against Pep Guardiola’s side, he was willing to acknowledge that second-half play at Ibrox was important.

Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool boosted confidence at the perfect moment in their 7-1 win over Rangers

“Usually we drink a beer after away games, it’s been so long since I drank, after one we’re probably drunk!” said Klopp, whose behavior changed noticeably over the course of the game to the point that he actually seemed to be enjoying it again.

‘We had a very positive conversation at halftime. We conceded a goal (to Scott Arlfield), scored the equalizer and had some really positive football moments. In the end we had to get clear in the last third and we clearly succeeded – all the goals were absolutely amazing.

“How we played, drafted and finished them. A game lasts 95 minutes, if you can build on parts of the first half then you should do that and we have done that. It changes the mood, for sure. It’s completely different.

“That’s good, but we all know who we welcome on Sunday and this will be a different game. But it’s better to go into the game like we do tonight! We’ll see, I’m always ready for a change in the right direction, but we’ll see.

Liverpool boss admits they will face ‘the best football team in the world’ on Sunday

“We don’t have to make it big, but the best football team in the world is coming to Anfield right now on Sunday. We’ll see what we can do. It’s not that we come up with a big mouth saying, “We’re waiting!” – not at all.’

Klopp was delighted to see Nunez score his second goal in successive games and was equally enthusiastic about the performances of young players Fabio Carvalho and Harvey Elliott, who finished the defeat with a smart finish.

However, he had special praise for Salah, saying, “You could see the reaction. I couldn’t see Mo partying because he was always running in the corner, but with Darwin it meant the world to him.

“All the efforts are paying off. We all know when it’s up and running for Mo he’s exceptional. Obviously a different position for him. I hope everything works out for him. I’m happy to score goals, but if we win the game 2-1, I’ll be overjoyed.

“The way it went, it can happen. We were really just doing it and meeting us at the wrong time isn’t cool.’
