Jurgen Klopp has admitted Trent Alexander-Arnold can improve but insisted the right-back is still ‘world class’.

The 23-year-old’s form has declined this season as Liverpool struggle to match the results fans have become accustomed to under Klopp.

He has also fallen out of favor with Gareth Southgate, with Reece James starting at right-back in England’s final game.

The Liverpool right-back has fallen out of favor with England in recent months

Ahead of Liverpool’s clash with Brighton this weekend, Klopp seemed wary when asked about Alexander-Arnold. He said, ‘Do we really want to open this box? You are English journalists and we can’t discuss the squads until the World Cup starts.

‘That’s why you make massive things out of this. My honest opinion would make headlines. You want that? It might help Germany, but not England.

“I have a lot to say, but I don’t think it makes sense. We’re in the right place here, it’s totally different. I see Trent differently, that’s for sure.

Chelsea’s Reece James was the preferred right-back when England took on Germany

The manager also pointed out that the right-back is still young and needs to develop. He continued: “People talk about him not being a good defender, that’s not true, he’s a good defender, he doesn’t always defend well, that’s true.

“He’s 23. We’re working on it. Whatever team I would have at the moment, I would pick Trent. He is exceptional.

When questioned about Southgate’s decision to leave Alexander-Arnold out, Klopp sympathized but disagreed.

Klopp said he ‘sees things differently’ to England manager Gareth Southgate

“England is blessed to have players in this position,” he said. “Reece James can play in the back three times, it was good for Chelsea.

“It’s Gareth’s decision. He made it. I see it differently. Does not mean [it’s] right or wrong.

Trent didn’t come back in a party mood, but he accepts the manager’s decision because he is extremely smart.

“The manager decides and more often than not here he is elected. It’s clear, he’s a world-class player.’
