Jurgen Klopp has admitted Liverpool cannot compete with Manchester City and believes the signing of Erling Haaland has put the champions in a different orbit.

Liverpool equaled City in the four seasons before, with 357 points in 152 games against City’s 358. But on Sunday they face each other with City 13 points ahead and Haaland who has scored 15 goals in nine games. The striker is on £850,000 a week after signing from Borussia Dortmund in a deal worth up to £85 million.

Liverpool themselves made a major investment in Darwin Nunez over the summer, but he is a work in progress and Klopp explained why his club must choose their transfer targets carefully.

When asked how Liverpool City could keep up, Klopp said: “You won’t like the answer. No one can compete with City in that. You have the best team in the world and you put the best striker on the market. Whatever it costs, you just do it. I know City won’t like it. Nobody will like it. You asked the question, but you know the answer.

‘What is Liverpool doing? We cannot act like them. It is not possible. There are three clubs in world football that can do whatever they want financially. It’s legal and everything is fine.

“We have to look at it (and say, ‘We have to make it younger, and a prospect here and a talent here’” – and that’s what you have to do. And you (try to) compete.

“I heard at Newcastle (Sporting Director Dan Ashworth) said: ‘There is no ceiling for this club’. He is right! He is absolutely right. There is no ceiling for Newcastle. Congratulations! But some other clubs have ceilings.’
