The Los Angeles Dodgers canceled their plans to hold a bobblehead night for troubled starting pitcher Julio Urias later this month.

Urias was recently placed on administrative leave by MLB after being arrested over the weekend for domestic violence.

Before Urias was arrested in downtown LA after being named as one of several celebrities expected to attend Inter Miami’s game against LAFC, the Dodgers planned to hand out tens of thousands of the 27-year-old pitcher’s bobbleheads.

The promotion was scheduled for the team’s September 21 game against domestic rival San Francisco Giants and would honor his participation in last season’s World Baseball Classic.

Each bobblehead would feature Urias in his pitching move, decked out in a Mexico jersey uniform.

The Dodgers announced on X that they would be replacing the Urias bobbleheads with “a giveaway of select premium bobbleheads to the first 30,000 fans in attendance.”

Before he was placed on leave, the Dodgers also opted not to allow Urias to travel with the team for their current road trip that began Tuesday night against the Miami Marlins. He was supposed to make his next start on Thursday, but that clearly won’t happen again.

“It’s a day-to-day for us now,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said before Tuesday’s game in Miami. “I don’t want to get too far ahead of things. As time passes with certain things, you learn that simplifying, day by day, is the best way to deal with it.’

The recent arrest also marks his second domestic violence arrest in the past four years, following an incident that occurred in 2019 when he was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence.

Following the 2019 incident, Urias was suspended for 20 games under Major League Baseball’s domestic violence policy, although he was not prosecuted by the Los Angeles City Attorney on the condition that he complete a 52-week domestic violence counseling program .

Under the policy, players are typically placed on administrative leave by the league during an investigation, which happened to Urias before his suspension in 2019.

No player has ever received two separate suspensions under the MLB policy instituted in 2015.

This also isn’t the first time in recent years that the Dodgers have had to cancel a promotion at short notice after seeing a player embroiled in controversy.

LA previously canceled a bobblehead night in 2021 due to Trevor Bauer’s sexual assault

Urias has now been placed on the administrative leave list along with Wander Franco during an investigation

In 2021, former LA pitcher Trevor Bauer had a bobble head day canceled after sexual assault allegations were made against him.

Urías is the second star player on a battling team under investigation by the MLB in recent weeks after Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco was placed on administrative leave while authorities in the Dominican Republic investigated him for an alleged relationship with a minor.

A 20-game winner in 2021 and National League ERA leader (2.16) in 2022, Urias is 60-25 with a 3.11 ERA in 158 games (122 starts) since making his MLB debut with the Dodgers in 2016. He helped LA will win the World Series in 2020 and finished third in the NL Cy Young voting last season.

Urias pitches this season on a one-year, $14.25 million contract and will become an unrestricted free agent after this season.
