Julia Louis-Dreyfus opened up about being diagnosed with stage two breast cancer the day after winning her sixth consecutive Emmy Award during an interview with WJ. Magazine which was published on Wednesday.
The 62-year-old artist discussed the shock she felt after receiving the news, which she likened to “a terrible black comedy.”
The Seinfeld actress, who was unaware that the classic sitcom’s creator was considering a possible reboot, also opened up about how her life had changed for the better in the years since her diagnosis.
Louis-Dreyfus began by sharing that she received a call from her doctor the morning after she won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for her role in Veep in September 2017.
The artist portrayed the show’s main character, Selina Meyer, for the entire duration of the show, which lasted from 2012 to 2019.

She recalled, “It felt like it was written. It felt like it was a terrible black comedy. And then it kind of turned into hysterical crying.”
The artist subsequently admitted that she became fearful for her health after receiving the devastating news, which also changed her perspective on mortality.
‘You just don’t consider it for yourself, you know, that’s a kind of arrogance of people. But of course we’re all going to bite the bullet at some point,” she said.
Louis-Dreyfus was finally declared cancer-free in October 2018, after undergoing a double mastectomy and six chemotherapy treatments.
The actress also spoke about the positive changes she made in her life after battling the disease.
‘I notice that I live more consciously. It’s not like he’s yelling at me all the time, but there’s more of a laser focus,” she said.
The performer opened up about how her battle with breast cancer changed her outlook on life at the 2023 New Yorker Festival, which took place last month, and talked about the benefits of staying stress-free.
She stated via People: ‘I’m just so happy to be here, you know. I think I enjoy things more. I think I’m working hard now to try and not let my stress get into my body, if I can.”

Although Louis-Dreyfus remained realistic about the difficulty of staying calm in tense situations, she stated that the benefits of reducing stress were especially beneficial to her mental and physical health.
‘That’s a tough nut to crack, you know, because we’re all stressed. But it does have an impact,” she says.
The actress concluded by saying that she was committed to maintaining a positive outlook on life despite her battle with breast cancer.
‘I’m not necessarily saying stress gave me cancer, but it’s not good for you. And it’s not a nice place to live in either. So I’m just very focused on…trying to enjoy my life as much as possible,” she said.
