Julia Fox SLAMS the Met Gala – claiming it’s about ‘politics and privilege
Julia Fox sensationally slammed the Met Gala by calling the glittering, star-studded soiree “old” and exclusive, while berating her hostess Anna Wintour for using it as an outrageous display of “privilege” and wealth.
In an exclusive conversation with DailyMail.com, the 33-year-old model and ex of Kanye West, who has become a fashion icon in her own right in recent years thanks to her very unique approach to personal style, the 73-year-old called on Anna to step aside as she overturned her decision to honor the late designer Karl Lagerfeld at this year’s event.
“To be honest, the Met Gala has never spoken to me — I mean, look who’s running it,” said Julia, who admits she never got an invite to the annual celebrity event.
However, the fashion star insists that even if an invitation were sent to her, she would not attend, stating that she does not want to lend her support to such an exaggerated display of money and privilege.
Model Julia Fox has sensationally criticized the Met Gala, labeling it “stale” and insisting it’s nothing more than a blatant display of “privilege” and excessive wealth
The 33-year-old also took aim at Met Gala host Anna Wintour, insisting it’s time for the 73-year-old Vogue Editor to step aside and make way for someone “fresh” with new ideas .
“If it were about fashion I’d be there, but it’s not,” she continued. “It’s about politics, privilege, who your parents are and how much money you make.”
On Monday night, stars from fashion, music, art and entertainment gathered in New York to attend the glitzy soiree at the Metropolitan Museum.
This year’s theme was ‘Karl Lagerfeld-A Line In Fashion’, honoring the controversial designer who spent more than 50 years at the helm of Chanel and Fendi.
Speaking on the theme, Julia expressed her outrage at the choice, taunting the late designer as someone who “upheld the ideals of supremacy and imperialism.”
During his tenure at Chanel, Lagerfeld was accused of making several misogynistic, Islamophobic and racist remarks.
In particular, he railed against the #MeToo movement, saying he was “fed up” with allegations about movie producer Harvey Weinstein and other powerful entertainment industry players being accused of sexual assault and telling victims to “join a monastery’ instead of making accusations.
The German designer, who died in 2019 at the age of 85, also had form when it came to those he considered too “fat”.
He criticized German supermodel Heidi Klum, 49, who he said was “just too heavy.” [with] too big bust’ along with singer Adele, 35, whom he labeled as ‘a little too fat’.
Every year, some of the world’s biggest stars — including Kim Kardashian, whose ex Kanye West dated Julia — put on an elaborate style show on the steps of the Met Gala
However, Julia insists the event has nothing to do with celebrating real fashion, claiming it’s about “privilege, who your parents are and how much money you make.”
The model has become something of a fashion icon in recent years thanks to her groundbreaking personal style, but insists she will probably never be welcome at the Met Gala
As for Julia, those same exclusionary ideals are still shown every year at the Met Gala, with the model railing against the lack of diversity at this year’s event.
“There were no transgender people of color or even transgender people there,” she said.
One major change Julia wants to see happen is the removal of Vogue editrix Anna from the helm of the event — a position she’s held since 1995.
Since taking over the organization of Diana Vreeland’s Met Gala, it has become one of the most anticipated celebrity events of the year – and for some, it’s the highlight of the fashion calendar every year.
However, Julia is now targeting Anna, calling on her to step down from her fashion cap — not just at the Met Gala but also at Vogue — to allow a “fresh” replacement to pick up her mantle and start the soiree. to guide. in modern times.
‘She [Anna Wintour] just won’t stop – how long will she go on?’ Julia asked, adding that Anna’s fashion publication is more about “commerce than art.”
“There is a disconnection. American Vogue is not my favourite: it should be more fun and fresh and new energy.’
To that end, Julia wants to replace big stars and “fake babies” like Lila Moss – who attended this year’s event with her supermodel mom Kate – on the Met Gala red carpet with designers and artists, whose work she believes deserves to be celebrated at such a prestigious occasion.
The fashion star also criticized Wintour for choosing to honor the late designer Karl Lagerfeld this year, saying he was someone who “upheld the ideals of supremacy and imperialism.”
“The Met Gala has a gatekeeper feel to it,” she opined. “I don’t rank people in my head based on who their parents are or how much money they have: the Met isn’t exclusive, it’s exclusive.
“I don’t want to sound like I’m hurt [because] I like the Met [Museum] but I want to do more for more designers and people who don’t have the same privilege, so that they can be seen and heard.’
Julia admits she is considering creating a rival event that will focus more on the talents of less celebrated stars in the fashion industry – while also helping to raise money for those who really need them.
“I want to support fashion designers,” she explained. ‘Me and my friends hope to start our own gala and help give money to underprivileged people and single mothers.
“I just want to say that people don’t aspire to be like these people [who went to the Met] strive to be yourself. There is a little boy or girl who will look at me without being ashamed – fashion and art is about vision.’
A mother herself, Julia welcomed her first child Valentino in 2020 with her former husband, pilot Peter Artemiev, whom she married in 2018.
It wasn’t until her divorce in 2021 that Julia burst onto the fashion and celebrity scene when she arrived on the arm of Kanye West at Schiaparelli’s haute couture runway show in Paris in January 2022.
Julia’s performance with Kanye — whose ex-wife Kim Kardashian is a Met Gala regular — garnered international headlines, with her quirky style making her an overnight fashion icon.
While critics attributed Julia’s unique style to Kanye, the actress said it was all thanks to her best friend Briana (pictured with Kanye West in Paris, January 2022)
And while many attributed Julia’s unique style to Kanye, the actress said it was all thanks to her and a friend.
“No one wants to take credit for my own style, but it was me and my best friend Briana,” she insists.
In terms of her formative education, Julia believes those with a unique sense of self-expression should be put on a pedestal more than those who have not worked for their own success.
“I went to the same high school as Basquiat,” she recalls. “It was such a great school. It was a school that threw us into the world. We just completed an internship.
“New York used to be full of misfits and freaks; now it’s full of privileged children and it’s stagnant and people are tired of it, it’s depressing.’
Having spent the pandemic in New York, Julia was delighted to see her hometown restored to its former glory, as she says the elite have moved out of their luxury Manhattan apartments.
“During the pandemic, they all went back to their mansions and New York was cool again. The media said it was full of crime, but it wasn’t,” she said.
