Jude Bellingham slams the decision to let Chelsea retake their penalty
‘Just a JOKE!’: Jude Bellingham criticizes referees for allowing Kai Havertz to retake his penalty after an invasion… with the Chelsea star scoring on second attempt to knock Borussia Dortmund out of the Champions League
Jude Bellingham criticized the decision to allow Chelsea to replay their second-half penalty after the Blues knocked his team Borussia Dortmund out of the Champions League on Tuesday.
The contentious moment came early in the second half after Raheem Sterling leveled Chelsea in the tie with a well-placed shot just before half-time.
Marius Wolf was then deemed to have handled Ben Chilwell’s cross after referee Danny Makkelie was sent to the pitch monitor. Kai Havertz stepped forward, but saw his spot shot hit the post and miss out.
However, he was given a second chance to score after replays showed Dortmund players encroaching, and he made no mistake the second time around. The penalty turned out to be the equalizer-breaking goal, but Bellingham questioned whether it should have been given in the first place.
I have not seen the incident again. From where he was standing it looked like he was pretty close and I’m not sure what else he can do with his hands,” Bellingham told BT Sport.
Kai Havertz was allowed to repeat his penalty after the invasion of the Dortmund players.
Jude Bellingham felt that the penalty should not have been awarded in the first place.
He was very frustrated with referee Danny Makkelie for allowing the penalty kick to be retaken.
He was then shown the incident and was not convinced.
A meter or two away, I’m not really sure. I don’t want to get in trouble, I have paid them enough,” he added, appearing to reference previous fines he paid for contesting arbitration decisions.
However, the 19-year-old could not contain his anger when he spoke about the replay of the penalty.
“I think in itself it was disappointing, and then the fact that they had a repeat, I think it’s a joke,” he said.
“For every penalty, especially when you have such slow acceleration, there are people who encroach on the box by a yard or so.” But I guess that’s the game, he made the decision and we had to live with it.’
Following their European exit, Bellingham and Dortmund will now turn their attention to the Bundesliga title race and try to end Bayern Munich’s dominance in Germany.
Dortmund have won all their league games since the winter break and are level on points with Bayern with 11 games to go.
