José Mourinho’s difficult start as Fenerbahce manager continued on Tuesday night with his team’s elimination from the Champions League.

Mourinho, 61, was appointed manager of the Turkish giants this summer, replacing former coach Ismail Kartal, who left despite leading the club to 99 points last season.

The former Chelsea, Real Madrid and Internazionale manager has been welcomed in Istanbul in his first role since being sacked by AS Roma in January.

However, not everything has gone smoothly so far. The Portuguese was shown a yellow card after just 20 minutes of his first league match, a 1-0 win over Adana Demirspor, before his team failed to reach the group stage of the Champions League.

They lost 3-2 on aggregate on Tuesday night, despite their opponents, Lille, playing the final 11 minutes of extra time – including the goal – with 10 men.

Mourinho could now face one of his old clubs in the Europa League group stage: Manchester United.

Fenerbahce went into the match trailing 2-1 on aggregate after losing in France last week. Edon Zhegova scored in injury time to give the home side a lead going into the second leg.

It took until the 91st minute for the Turkish side to score an equalizer after Bafode Diakite scored a goal through his own net in the 91st minute of the match.

Aissa Mandi was tasked with deciding the match in Fenerbahce’s favour, but Jonathan David scored from the penalty spot with two minutes remaining to condemn Mourinho and co to defeat.

Last weekend, Mourinho vented his frustrations when a decision went against his team, making angry gestures and shouting at the referee and the fourth official.

Referee Atilla Karaoglan decided to intervene and gave Mourinho a yellow card. The 61-year-old player looked furious, showing that he is still a very temperamental player on the sidelines.

Mourinho was shown the yellow card after he was also warned last week in the first leg against Lille after becoming angry with the referee.
