Former Liverpool defender Jose Enrique has doubled down on his claim that the club’s owners are responsible for Jurgen Klopp’s departure.

The Germany boss sensationally announced last week that he will leave the club at the end of the season, ending a glittering nine-year spell on Merseyside.

Enrique, who played under Klopp when he joined from Dortmund during the 2015/2016 season, shared on social media after the announcement his belief that his former boss was simply ‘tired’ of the club’s American owners FSG.

Klopp then fired back at the former left-back, claiming he was wrong, but Enrique continued to insist FSG played a role in not backing the manager enough in the transfer market.

The 38-year-old said: “I think there are a lot of reasons why he is leaving, but they are reasons that we will probably never find out,” Enrique told Grosvenor Sport.

“Even if he doesn’t agree with me, I still think and believe that the owners have a lot to do with it. You can’t renew your contract and suddenly leave the club, that makes no sense. There must be more to it.

‘It must be something with the owners, he must be tired of having to perform miracles all the time. He now always has to do so much more than Manchester City and even Arsenal to get what he wants in the transfer window.

I don’t think he’s just tired in general. Why would you renew your contract a few months ago if you are tired? There is no point.’

After Enrique first claimed this, Klopp responded by saying: ‘I saw Jose Enrique, who I like a lot, saying it’s about FSG. “I can tell you absolutely that FSG has nothing to do with it.”

The hostility towards the owners probably reached its peak during the debacle that followed the failed creation of the European Super League in April 2021. It was revealed that FSG was not only a participant, but also a key player in the formation of the breakaway group.

However, the Reds’ owners have nevertheless presided over the club’s most successful period in a generation, appointing Klopp in 2015.
