Jordan Pickford and Harry Maguire lead England stars’ tributes to Gareth Southgate as the Three Lions boss steps down as manager after eight years in charge
England players have paid tribute to Gareth Southgate after he stepped down as manager of the Three Lions.
Southgate confirmed on Tuesday he was stepping down from his post, less than 48 hours after his team lost the 2024 European Championship final to Spain in their pursuit of their first major trophy since 1966.
Jordan Pickford, who started all seven of England’s matches at Euro 2024 and played in all 68 caps under Southgate, led the tributes on social media, wishing his former coach all the best for the future.
“Totally devastated,” Pickford wrote on social media. “This is going to hurt for a while. I appreciate everyone who supported us throughout the tournament and I want to thank all my teammates and staff for their work.
‘I would also like to say a special thank you to the boss for always believing in me during his time with us and I would like to wish him all the best in his next steps. Thank you Gareth.’
Maguire, who missed Euro 2024 through injury, meanwhile wrote: ‘You made us all believe again – memories that will last forever. Thanks boss.’
Declan Rice added: ‘Thanks Gaffer. It was a privilege to play for England under your guidance. Memories I will never forget. Good luck with your next adventure.’
Jude Bellingham shared an image of England on his Instagram story with the caption: ‘Thanks Gareth’.
