Jordan Boyd, Carlton: Detail in photo of AFL star sparks huge debate online – as fans flock to player’s defence: ‘Imagine being offended by this’
A photo of Carlton’s Jordan Boyd has sparked heated debate after fans noticed an unusual detail in a photo of him holding his hands over his face after the Blues’ tough loss to Brisbane.
Boyd, 25, had a fantastic game, with 17 disposals, five points, four tackles and 461 meters gain, but it was his colorful nail polish that sent fans into a frenzy.
The blue, pink, yellow and black fashion statement was captured in a photo by the AFL’s chief photographer Michael Wilson, who called it “the pain of defeat.”
But one footy fan was so upset by it that she shouted “netball?” what sport is this photo from,” while another asked: “Why is he wearing nail polish?” and a third wrote: ‘Hmmm nice nail polish.’
It didn’t take long for other fans to come to his defense as one social media user wrote: “Imagine being insulted by a man wearing nail polish.”

This was followed by many more comments in support of Boyd, one of the AFL’s top prospects.
‘So many insecure men in the comments! Afraid of another man wearing nail polish,” wrote one.
Another said it was “concerning how many low-income people who have issues with a man wearing nail polish roaming around society. Get a grip.’
Some women were jealous of how well Boyd wore the decorations on his nails.
“I’m just annoyed and impressed that Jordan Boyd can apply nail polish better than me,” wrote one.
The same commentator added: ‘You’ll laugh when Sam Newman and co dress up as women on the Footy Show, but as soon as a player wears nail polish… you’ll all complain. Honest dinkum.”
Another was so furious they threatened to damage their own phone, writing: “If I have to see one more mindless comment about Jordan Boyd’s nail polish I’m going to throw my phone down a storm drain.”
Some said it showed Boyd was confident of his place in the world, with one writing: ‘Why not? Probably not insecure in his masculinity, unlike others.’
Another imagined that someone else had done the painting for him, writing, “I suspect a young family member or fan painted their nails for ‘luck’ during the finale sequence.”
‘Would explain the colors and chips.’
Others maintained some perspective that how the game is played is far more important than whether or not a player paints their nails.
“Jordan Boyd is a weapon, shame on everyone talking about him,” wrote one.
And another kept it very simple for those easily offended, writing: ‘Very impressed with Jordan Boyd. Has what it takes to make it in this barbershop.’
