Joni Mitchell will perform her first headlining concert in over 23 years after a recent surprise return to the stage in August.
The 78-year-old music legend will perform on June 10, 2023 at the Gorge Amphitheater, a Washington state location east of Seattle, her boyfriend, singer Brandi Carlile, announced on The Daily Show on Wednesday.
“I can’t believe it’s happening, but it’s happening,” Carlile said. “And she’s going to crush it.”
Folk legend: Joni Mitchell, seen in April in Las Vegas, will give her first headlining concert in over 23 years after a recent surprise return to the stage in August
Carlile brought Mitchell on stage with her at the Newport Folk Festival in Rhode Island over the summer.
Mitchell battled an aneurysm in 2015 and hadn’t performed a full show in public in two decades with her last headlining show in the 2000 Both Sides Now tour.
In Newport, they replicated a periodic jam session with musical friends that takes place at Mitchell’s California home.
She sang and played guitar on favorites such as ‘A Case of You’, ‘Both Sides Now’ and ‘The Circle Game’, as well as some standards.

When they took the stage with musicians like Carlile, Wynonna Judd and Marcus Mumford, the band wasn’t quite sure how much Mitchell would like to sing.
“She completely took over the show and became the artist we all know she is,” said Carlile. ‘We didn’t go to sleep that night. We stayed up until the sun came up. Joni, frankly, loves to perform and she’s great at it.’
“She’s as good at it now as she was,” Carlile added.
Took over: “She completely took over the show and became the performer we all know she is,” Carlile said of Mitchell’s performance over the summer. ‘We didn’t go to sleep that night. We stayed up until the sun came up. Joni, downright, loves to perform and she’s great at it’
Mitchell left the experience and wanted to be back on the podium, Carlile said.
The Gorge appealed to Mitchell for its beauty and proximity to Canada, where she grew up.
The location is also home to Carlile, who lives in Washington State.
Carlile will be performing there on June 9 and opening for Mitchell the following evening on June 10, she said.
“In twenty years no one has been able to buy a ticket to see Joni Mitchell play. So this is huge,” Carlile said.
Next year: Carlile will perform at The Gorge on June 9 and open for Mitchell the following night, screened March 1974 in Berkeley, California
