Jonathan Peter Doig has jail term reduced after paying girl to send him sexual videos

Vile pedophile who once ran for Scott Morrison’s chair before being imprisoned for paying a young girl in the Philippines to send him sexual videos, WINS appeal to have his prison sentence shortened

  • The sentence has been reduced to seven years

A former Greens candidate who was jailed after paying to see “real-time” sexual abuse of a child in the Philippines has won his appeal and had his sentence reduced.

Just months after the 2019 election, where Jonathan Peter Doig ran against Scott Morrison in Cook, the veteran political activist began transferring money abroad to a 13-year-old girl and two others.

The then 57-year-old sent money for about four months before striking up a conversation with the girl via Facebook Messenger in December of that year.

The court heard that the child would message Doig about money for school, appointments, living expenses or food for her family. He would then demand sexual videos and images in exchange for the money.

In December 2021, Judge Gina O’Rourke sentenced the pedophile to nine years in prison with a minimum non-parole period of five years and six months.

But Doig appealed his sentence to the NSW Court of Appeal earlier this year, arguing it was ‘manifestly excessive’.

A verdict handed down this week by Justices Robert Beech-Jones, Peter Garling and Dina Yehia described the violation as an “appalling” case of predatory conduct.

But they found both the sentence and the non-parole period excessive, instead Doig was sentenced to seven years and six months in prison with a minimum term of four years and six months.

The total sentence of the pedophile is reduced by one and a half years.

At the time of his offence, the aspiring politician was a software engineer working at the University of New South Wales.

Just days before his arrest by AFP officers on June 10, 2020, he recorded three video calls with the child, totaling about 19 minutes, directing her sexual activity.

In one of the videos, when the girl moves her body close to the camera, Doig can see a “lick” on the screen several times.

He was convicted on four charges; inducing a child to engage in sexual activity, possession of child abuse material, persistent sexual abuse of a child outside Australia and ensuring that abuse material is transferred.

In her remarks, Judge O’Rouke found that he had manipulated the child and used her desperate need for money to satisfy his “pathetic and shameful” sexual desires.

“The perpetrator has clearly and abhorrently taken advantage of the child’s vulnerability and her impoverished circumstances in the Philippines,” she said.

“During each video call, (the child) engages in sexual activity while the perpetrator watches in real time.

“On multiple occasions, the perpetrator used words, actions and/or speech to direct what he wanted her to do.”

He is eligible for parole in June 2026.
