Actor Jonathan Majors has postponed his trial on charges of assaulting an ex over a legal technicality that will push his case up for at least a few weeks.
The actor was arrested on March 25 on felony charges for allegedly assaulting Grace Jabbari, his ex-girlfriend.
Majors appeared virtually in New York Criminal Court on Wednesday and the prosecutor filed a certificate of compliance, indicating they are ready for trial.
However, his lawyers have said they found deficiencies in the certificate.
Majors’ new trial date has not yet been set. He vehemently denies any wrongdoing.
The actor was arrested on March 25 on felony charges for allegedly assaulting Grace Jabbari, his ex-girlfriend.
Grace Jabbari allegedly attacked the Creed actor first and reportedly admitted to being the aggressor in text messages
Jabbari initially told police that Majors had beaten and strangled her, but the strangulation charges were dropped. Now he is only charged with hurting her arm.
Jabbari admitted in text messages to Majors that she was the aggressor, his lawyers claim. After the alleged attack, she was seen in nightclubs drinking and partying with friends.
Majors has always maintained his innocence, and NYPD sources quoted by The New York Times say there is enough evidence to also charge Jabbari with assaults on him.
It remains unclear why she has not yet been arrested.
Majors filed his own domestic violence report against her in June, telling police he had been beaten and scratched by a violent and “hysterical” Jabbari.
Majors, whose star was rising quickly, was dropped by his management firm and PR firm after the charges were dropped.
He has attended previous court hearings with his new girlfriend, actress Meagan Good.
In the immediate aftermath of the incident, Jabbari texted Majors to apologize.
Majors, 33, entered court with new girlfriend Meagan Good and his lawyers in August for the first day of his assault and harassment trial
The actor has always maintained his innocence and has reported domestic violence against his accuser
“Please let me know if you have this. They assured me that there will be no charge. They said they had to arrest you as protocol when they saw the injuries on me and they knew we had a fight.
“I’m so angry that they did that. And I’m sorry you’re in this position. Will make sure nothing happens to this. I told them it was my fault I tried to take your phone… I just got out of the hospital… call me when you’re gone.”
The actor did not respond.
A few hours later, around 9:30 p.m., she sent another text message to Majors, telling him that she had spoken to officials again.
In the text, she wrote, “Reiterated that this was not an assault and that they do not have my blessing on any charges.”
His lawyers have submitted surveillance footage from New York nightclubs showing Jabbari using the hand she says was injured in the “attack” with friends.
Attorney for the Majors, Priya Chaudhry, said after a recent hearing: “One hundred and thirty-one days ago, the authorities unjustly handcuffed Jonathan Majors in his own home and dragged him to jail on the word of a woman who is now being hunted down by the NYPD.
Bravely, Jonathan Majors exposed to the NYPD the relentless, alcohol-fueled abuse he suffered at the hands of Grace Jabbari, an enduring nightmare in their relationship. As soon as Jabbari sets foot in New York again, the NYPD is ready to arrest her.
For four months his life, career and reputation were torn apart for Jonathan Majors, the real victim of this shameful ordeal. Yet he remains steadfast in his determination to be delivered from this harrowing ordeal.’
