A man accused of killing a two-year-old boy and wounding his twin sister could face the death penalty after spending years in prison for breaking another child's arm.
Jonathan Allen Dunn, 36, of Roy, Utah, is charged with aggravated murder, aggravated child abuse and two counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child. AP reported.
The charges come after he previously served a two-year prison sentence for breaking a child's arm seven years ago.
The previously convicted criminal could now face the death penalty after a two-year-old boy died in his care.
Dunn told officers he had been babysitting the children when he called 911 himself Thursday morning to report the two-year-old boy was not breathing, according to an affidavit supporting the allegations.
The 36-year-old admitted punishing the children in the back, sides and chest on Wednesday evening.
He said “he hit them harder than he should have,” according to court documents.
Court documents also showed that Dunn reported pinching the young children and pushing them against a doorframe.
He said he gave the twins Tylenol as well as cough medicine for the little boy and sleep medicine for the little girl's children.
The boy was reportedly wheezing Friday morning, so Dunn gave him more cough medicine.
Between 8:30 a.m. and 9 a.m., the boy stopped breathing, Dunn allegedly told officers.
Both children had bruises all over their bodies and the girl was taken to the hospital to be treated for a brain hemorrhage, court records said.
A GoFundMe has since been set up to raise money to support the family's devastated family's bill for funeral expenses and medical bills.
Dunn was held without bail and will make his first court appearance on December 26.
He was sentenced in May 2017 to a maximum of 15 years in prison for breaking the arm of a child he was caring for in 2016.
He was released from prison in April 2019 and was on parole until December 2021, Utah Department of Corrections officials said.
