Johnny Depp was quick to celebrate Robert Downey Jr.’s Oscar win. on social media, but had to withdraw an image that later turned out to have been photoshopped.

The 60-year-old Pirates of the Caribbean star took to his Instagram Stories on Sunday to congratulate his longtime friend and celebrate his Best Supporting Actor win for his remarkable performance in Oppenheimer.

However, the first post featured a digitally altered image of the two stars, prompting fans to label it a Photoshop botch, reminiscent of Kate Middleton’s recent Mother’s Day photo mishap.

The photo used by Depp turned out to be a doctored version of a 1988 photo showing Downey with his then-girlfriend, Sarah Jessica Parker, while Depp was completely absent from the original photo.

Depp promptly replaced the image with an authentic photo of him and Downey at the Golden Globes in 2011, adding the caption, “Let’s try this again…congratulations to my sweet friend.”

The manipulated image of Depp and Downey seems to do that come from a fan account and has been circulating on fan sites for several years.

The original photo of Downey with Parker, taken at a Young Artists Unite event in Los Angeles in November 1988, shows the actors looking in love, as they were together for seven years, from 1984 to 1991.

Despite the photo being fake, Depp and Downey really do have a long-lasting friendship, which is evident from the numerous authentic photos taken of them together over the years.

Downey even congratulated Depp following the conclusion of his defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard in 2021.

The Sherlock Holmes star took home his first Academy Award won Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Lewis Strauss Oppenheimer.

The actor has received two Oscar nominations in the past: one for his leading role in Chaplin from 1992 and one for his supporting role in Tropic Thunder from 2008.

He alluded to his “terrible childhood” during his Oscar acceptance speech after host Jimmy Kimmel made a very awkward joke about his drug use.

The presenter, 56, who returned for a fourth time, had left the A-lister audience grinning and cringing in equal measure.

The joke went unnoticed as RDJ looked glum as he stared at the camera while fans criticized Kimmel for his “bottom of the barrel” jokes about substance abuse.
