John Waters revealed that he once bumped into the late Angela Lansbury at a sex club in New York City that catered to “both gay and straight perverts.”

The 76-year-old Hairspray director originally recalled seeing the legendary actress — who passed away last week at age 96 — in a sex club called Hellfire in the 1980s. in his 2019 book Mr. Know-It-All: The Tarnished Wisdom of a Filth Elder.

The filmmaker recently commented on the spirited story, saying: Page six“It may have been the only night she was there, but her very presence made Hellfire a little more welcoming.”

He further added: ‘[Angela] was pure class even forty years ago when this kind of club was all the rage.’

In the meantime LGBTQ nation’s Ed Gunts recalled a promotional tour Waters did for his book, where he recounted the time he saw Lansbury.

During the tour, Waters made sure the Murder She Wrote star was in the sex club only to hang out, and not participate in any of the action.

‘Everyone went. She did nothing. Hellfire was a straight, gay bar [where] people had sex. You’d be standing there talking about Alain Robbe-Grillet’s new novel, and a [penis] would come through a glory hole and then you just go down,” he continued.

He spoke more about the atmosphere in the club: ‘Maybe you’re sitting there talking to someone and looking down and someone is licking your shoe. You just kick them away. But then they like it, so you had to say “thank you!” say. and then they would go away.’

The Pink Flamingos director also remembered seeing Andy Warhol and Truman Capote as well as “lots of celebrities” on the spot.

Lansbury died a week ago at the age of 96, just five days before her 97th birthday. The Irish-British and American actress, known for her roles in Murder, She Wrote and Beauty and the Beast, passed away peacefully early Tuesday morning at her home in Los Angeles, her three children announced.

Lansbury became a legend in Hollywood and on Broadway during a career spanning an impressive eight decades, starring alongside some of the industry’s best-known stars.

She was best known for her portrayal of mystery writer and amateur detective Jessica Fletcher on the CBS series Murder, She Wrote, which ran from 1984 to 1996. Lansbury was nominated for ten Golden Globes for her role in the program, of which she won four.

In 2013, she received an Honorary Academy Award in recognition of her 80-year acting career.
