John Stamos credits his therapist with saving his life and career.

The actor and singer, whose 6-year-old son Billy joined him onstage at a Beach Boys concert, spoke candidly about his therapy during the season two premiere of Hulu’s Unprisoned in New York City on July 16.

Stamos, 60, said he has been seeing acclaimed psychiatrist Phil Stutz, who appears in the Jonah Hill documentary Stutz, for about two decades.

“When I first went to Stutz, he said, ‘You know, if you weren’t so damn stupid, you’d realize how good you have it,’ and I said, ‘You’re right,’” he explained.

The actor also convinced his late Full House co-star Bob Saget to try therapy.

He drove me crazy [when we first met] and I said, “You need to go to therapy if you want to be friends with me,” so he went to Stutz and Stutz helped him too.’

Saget died in January 2022 from head injuries in Orlando, Florida.

Stamos said his therapist “went to great lengths to help me get sober” after he was arrested for driving under the influence in 2015.

According to his memoir, If You Would Have Told Me, he checked into rehab a month after his arrest.

Stamos, 60, plays Murphy, a new character in Unprisoned.
