Dramatic moment alleged gunman loitering outside John Ibrahim’s Sydney mansion struggles with police after they ‘pounced on the wrong car’

Footage has emerged of the moment a suspected gunman wearing a balaclava clashed with police outside the home of ‘King of the Cross’ John Ibrahim.

At around 9am on Thursday morning, two men were seen acting suspiciously before police were called to George Street near Dover Heights in Sydney’s east.

The two men fled in a Cupra SUV and were heading to Bellevue Hill when they were stopped by police.

The 20-year-old driver was arrested while the 24-year-old passenger fled on foot before being apprehended in a nearby backyard. A semi-automatic firearm and revolver were found in the car.

Video footage shows a plainclothes police officer with a clearly visible gun holster grappling with a man dressed all in black and wearing a balaclava. The man escapes and runs away.

A second man sits handcuffed on the sidewalk.

According to some reports, police are investigating whether the alleged gunman sprang into action when they saw a neighbor of Mr Ibrahim driving down the street in a car that looked very similar to one he sometimes drives, before realizing their mistake.

Detectives were seen speaking to Mr Ibrahim at his home shortly after the arrests. Daily Mail Australia does not suggest Mr Ibrahim is accused of any wrongdoing.

Police had cordoned off roads leading to Dover Heights as a PolAir helicopter circled above the wealthy seaside suburb as they pursued the two men.

Later, around 10am, a black Range Rover was seen leaving the area under police escort.

A neighbor said she witnessed the police chase.

“I thought it was fine as long as the police chased them,” she told The Daily Telegraph.

She added that she considers the street to be quite safe, but that incidents receive more attention because of the area’s well-known residents, such as Ibrahim, whose glittering career as a nightclub owner in Kings Cross has been made into two TV shows.

“It doesn’t matter where you live, these kinds of things happen,” she said.

After the men were spotted, a police operation was launched

Both arrested men were taken to Waverley Police Station.

They appeared in court on Friday, charged with a total of 19 crimes.

Bankstown plumber Yousif Zrayka was charged with eight offences including stalking and intimidating Ibrahim’s neighbours, possessing an unauthorised and loaded black revolver and taking part in a police chase, reports The Daily Telegraph.

And 24-year-old Siaosi Maeakafa Tupoulahi from Campsie has been charged with 11 offences including possession of an unauthorised Glock pistol and ammunition, intimidation, assaulting police and failing to wear a seat belt.

According to court documents, the neighbor who was allegedly mistaken for the alleged target and their passenger are being referred to as “Witness A” and “Witness B” to protect their identities.

The accused duo will appear at Downing Centre Court on Monday for a bail hearing.
