Former PGA Championship winner John Daly withdrew from the tournament on Monday.

Daly won the 1991 PGA Championship and remains a fan favorite despite playing intermittently in recent years.

Tournament organizers said Daly will be replaced by German Stephan Jaeger.

Daly, 57, pulled out due to injury, although no details were disclosed about the nature of the injury. In recent years, Daly has needed a buggy to get around the course due to osteoarthritis.

In 2020, Daly said he had been diagnosed with bladder cancer, which he said in March last year had turned benign.

Daly is a heavy and lifelong smoker and a proud Diet Coke guzzler – once claiming he could drink 20 cans a day.

And a reporter once claimed that he followed Daly to the 2008 Windham Championship and counted that he smoked 21 cigarettes, about 12 cans of Diet Coke and six bags of M&Ms with peanuts.

Daly becomes the third former champion to retire from the event, joining Martin Kaymer (2010) and Jason Dufner (2013).

Daly has been a mainstay at the PGA Championship, missing just one of the last nine events (2020).

Daly played on the Champions Tour last weekend and finished T65 at the Regions Tradition.

The PGA Championship kicks off Thursday at Oak Hill’s East Course.
