Jogging can help reignite spark between couples wanting to improve sex life, health expert says

Forget oysters and champagne – running can be a great aphrodisiac for couples looking to improve their sex life.

According to a health expert, an evening of jogging, cycling, swimming or a brisk walk can ignite a sexual spark.

Exercise increases blood flow and testosterone, which can increase arousal in both men and women.

The endorphins released while walking around the block can put you in a passionate mood, while quelling the fatigue that causes couples to prioritize sleep or television over sex.

Professor Amanda Daley of Loughborough University, whose advice was published online by the university’s Center for Lifestyle Medicine and Behavior, said: ‘The likelihood of having sex is higher in men and women who are moderately physically active at least once a week, in instead of inactive.

‘Feeling fresh and energetic can influence people’s motivation for sex, and being fitter and toned can also boost their sexual confidence.’

Being active increases ‘happiness hormones’ such as endorphins and serotonin, as well as the ‘cuddle hormone’ oxytocin, which can help people feel physically closer to their loved ones and therefore increase arousal.

These hormones can counteract stress hormones like cortisol that are produced by a hard day of work or parenthood – which would otherwise make it harder to get in the mood for sex.
