Jogger is allegedly thrown to the ground and raped by a 16-year-old boy while going for a run in a Melbourne park

A 16-year-old boy has been charged with rape after a jogger was thrown to the ground and sexually assaulted in Melbourne.

The woman claims she heard someone coming from behind her as she drove under a bridge in the Jacana Reserve in Melbourne’s north at around 11.30am on August 14, police said.

She was then thrown to the ground by the man and sexually assaulted.

The woman managed to escape and ran to a parking lot, where two bystanders called the police.

She was taken to hospital with minor injuries, including scrapes and pain in her shoulders.

Detective Inspector Mark Burnett, of Victoria’s Sexual Offences Unit, praised the woman’s response to her attacker.

“She is a very brave woman and we were particularly impressed by the way she assisted the police with our investigation and gave a very accurate statement,” he told reporters on Friday.

“And the way she was able to fight and run away from the scene.”

The air force and the dog brigade searched the area, but could not find the man.

Police raided a home in Melbourne’s north on Tuesday.

A teenage boy was arrested and charged with rape, stalking, unlawful imprisonment, assault, reckless injury, imprisonment for sexual purposes and two counts of sexual assault.

The woman did not know him.

The boy will appear before the juvenile court.

Police previously released images of an unknown man, dressed in a dark sweater and pants. They wanted to speak to him as part of the investigation.
