Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid has been ruled out of their first Christmas game against the Miami Heat.

The Sixers declared the reigning MVP out for the game on Monday after he suffered an ankle sprain Shams Charania.

Embiid appeared to be struggling through pain after being shaken during the first quarter of Philadelphia's game against the Toronto Raptors on Friday and missing practice on Sunday.

He had crossed the pain barrier to extend his 30-10 streak to 13 games, finishing with 31 points and 10 rebounds in the Philadelphia 76ers' 121-111 victory over the Toronto Raptors.

But he scored all 31 points after landing awkwardly while trying to block a shot with 5:25 left in the first quarter.

He briefly went to the locker room after scoring just two points in the first quarter, but returned in the second quarter and had 11 points at halftime.

He bumped noticeably and winced occasionally, favoring his right leg, but that didn't slow him down in the second half. He also had nine assists and four blocks.

Embiid's streak is the longest since Kareem Abdul-Jabbar did it 16 straight games in 1971-72.

Only Abdul-Jabbar and Wilt Chamberlain have longer streaks than Embiid currently has.

Embiid has scored 30 points or more in 14 straight games, the most in the NBA since James Harden played 32 games in 2018-19.

However, that streak comes to an end with his absence on Christmas Day.
