Joe Cole believes Graham Potter has ‘ticked every box’ since he took on the role of Chelsea manager in September.

The 47-year-old came from Brighton in September after Thomas Tuchel was sacked, and is unbeaten in his first nine games, winning six and drawing three, including a 2-1 win against Red Bull Salzburg on Tuesday night.

And Cole from BT Sport praised Potter – with fellow pundit Glenn Hoddle tipping the manager to become head of the England national team one day.

Cole said, “When you interview him, he’s very honest and doesn’t deviate from what he sees as his message. You can’t imagine him getting confused, I’ve never seen him nervous in Brighton. People then stupidly questioned him.

“Everyone in that squad will feel they have an opportunity to step back and become a big player at Chelsea. Everyone is motivated. That will fade over time and he will know it. After two or three months, Hakim Ziyech, I’m using him as an example, his motivation might diminish and how do you deal with that?

“I’m sure Graham Potter will discuss that when the time comes. You almost look at things that could possibly go wrong and how he will react. He has ticked all the boxes so far, all the players are working on it and his garden is rosy right now.”

Former Chelsea midfielder Hoddle added: “He has a talented squad and so much depth. There are class players waiting on the bench to fill in, so you always know you can change it tactically.

“I think he needs more credit. He or Eddie Howe will one day become the England national team.’

The duo spoke after Potter’s Blues confirmed their passage to the knockout stages of the Champions League after beating Austria’s Salzburg from home thanks to goals from Mateo Kovacic and Kai Havertz.

BT Sport pundit Eni Aluko, a former England women’s international, claimed that Potter has tackled every challenge that has come his way thus far.

She concluded: ‘The question mark before taking the job was whether he could level up one more. How will he be in the Champions League, how will he be with top players.

“I think he has done everything a manager can do. The test will be when it gets tough what Potter we’re going to see next. That will be interesting.’
