Joe Cole compares Chelsea’s £88m signing of Mykhailo Mudryk to former team-mate Arjen Robben… as he predicts the Ukrainian will ‘get better and better’ but ‘need time to adjust’ to life at Stamford Bridge

Joe Cole has compared Chelsea’s £88m new signing Mykhailo Mudryk to his former team-mate Arjen Robben.

The 22-year-old was one of eight signings made by the Blues during the January transfer window, as the Blues spent a staggering £323m.

Mudryk has yet to start a match since his arrival, but he gave Chelsea fans glimpses of what could happen in draws against Liverpool and Fulham.

“He’s going to be a great player for Chelsea”, Cole told BT Sport ahead of Saturday’s game with West Ham in London.

Cole went on to make the comparison to Robben, while insisting that the Ukrainian will get better and better at Chelsea once he learns to play with Graham Potter.

‘Mudryk looks like a fantastic third end player who can beat a man, get the crowd excited and has great feet.

“He reminds me of Arjen Robben in the way he gets past players in short bursts and makes the right decisions in the final third.

I think he’s going to get better and better, so Chelsea have him at the right time.

You just need to settle down. It’s a big leap coming from the Ukraine to the Premier League so they’ll need to give him some time, but I’m very excited for him once he learns to play with Potter.’

The Robben comparison is high praise for the youngster, who scored ten goals in 18 appearances for Shakhtar Donetsk this season before moving up to the Premier League.

Robben enjoyed success at Chelsea, Real Madrid and, in particular, at Bayern Munich, where he played for ten seasons.

Cole isn’t the only player to compare Mudryk to Robben, as Steven Gerrard also made the comparison after his cameo against Liverpool.

Chelsea beat Arsenal in the 11th hour of the transfer, with Shakhtar preferring the financial package put together by the Blues.

However, Cole warned that Mudryk will need time to adjust to life at Stamford Bridge.

The Ukrainian could be set to make his first start for Chelsea when they travel to London Stadium for an early start on Saturday.

The Blues are in desperate need of a positive result as they currently sit ninth in the Premier League, ten points out of the Champions League places.

Cole, while speaking to BT Sport ahead of Saturday’s London clash, also added that the ‘clock is ticking’ on Declan Rice’s career and that every major club except Real Madrid will be looking to sign him.
