Joe Biden was a bit in awe of the star on his first full day of touring Northern Ireland on Wednesday, after spotting An Irish Goodbye star James Martin in the audience.

The president said he would go home to “brag to my daughter” after posing for a photo with 31-year-old James, who won this year’s Oscars for Best Live Action Short.

James became the first protagonist with Down syndrome to win an Academy Award for his portrayal of Lorcan in a story about brothers reunited after their mother’s death.

Joe, 80, led the applause after pointing out James in the audience during a speech at Ulster University in Belfast.

Belfast-born James, who worked as a lawyer at Starbucks before his big break, bowed his head in thanks and later posed for a photo with Biden.

The president said: ‘Today Northern Ireland is a whirlwind of creativity, art, poetry and theatre.

“Some of our favorite television shows and movies are filmed here, as you know.

“I have to meet James, I’ve had my picture taken, I’m going home and brag to my daughter.”

Joe is the proud father of his daughter Ashley, 41.

Biden said the priority for his trip – which includes three days in his ancestral homeland, the Republic of Ireland – was to “keep the peace” in Northern Ireland.

But senior figures in the pro-British Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), which is under pressure to resume local power-sharing, have been strikingly undiplomatic about the president.

Sammy Wilson, a DUP member of the British Parliament in Westminster, branded Biden “anti-British” and accused America’s second Catholic president of having “made his antipathy towards Protestants particularly very public.”

Another DUP legislator, Nigel Dodds, suggested that any mediation efforts would prove futile.

Meanwhile, James revealed last month that he would return to his job at Starbucks after his appearance in the film.

He said, ‘I help with all the customers. I’ve been doing that for quite some time. It’s fun.’

Keeping himself busy, the actor also works as a chef at local restaurant Scalini’s.

James celebrated his 31st birthday on stage at the Oscars, and co-director Tom Berkeley led the glittering A-list audience by singing Happy Birthday.

“This award is actually the second most important today, because it’s James’ birthday,” Tom explained.

He continued, “He’s here in Hollywood wearing a leopard print suit jacket. We’d like to spend the rest of our time here singing for James.’
