Joe Biden issues memo protecting abortion pills as Kamala heads to Florida for speech

Joe Biden attacked the Republicans and the conservative Supreme Court 6-3 on Sunday in what would have been the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade and issued a presidential memorandum protecting access to the abortion pill.

Meanwhile, Vice President Kamala Harris will speak in Tallahassee, Florida, on Sunday afternoon to announce the new directives and discuss “next steps in the fight for reproductive rights.”

In June, the Supreme Court struck down the landmark Roe v. Wade of 1973, rendering a ruling on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization that removed federal protections for abortion and returned rights to the states.

“Today, instead of commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision in Roe v. Wade, we are acknowledging that last year, the Supreme Court took away a constitutional right from the American people,” Biden wrote in a statement Sunday.

Harris will announce in her remarks that the administration’s new plan “guarantees safe access to medical abortion,” making specific reference to the drug mifepristone, which is a pill used to induce a medical abortion or force a miscarriage. Combined with misoprostol, the drug is 97 percent effective during the first 63 days of pregnancy and can also be effective in the second trimester.

“Democrats proudly encourage barbaric policies to allow unrestricted abortions, including infanticide. That’s all everyone needs to know,’ the Floruda Republican Party wrote in a statement about Harris’ upcoming comments.

The 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade has provoked a number of reactions from both sides of the abortion arguments.

Protesters at the March for Life in Washington, DC on Saturday marked the first time the rally had occurred in the post-Roe landscape. Thousands of pro-life protesters celebrated the Supreme Court decision.

Meanwhile, pro-abortion groups and activists criticized the decision, calling it a huge step backwards in the fight for women’s rights.

“As unpopular and dangerous as their agenda is, Republicans are racing against themselves to take away the freedoms of Americans, and they are not slowing down,” the National Democratic Party wrote in a 50th-anniversary statement.

The president, in his Sunday morning statement, again called on Congress to codify abortion protections into law, a feat now even more unlikely with the House’s Republican majority.

“Since the Supreme Court decision, Americans have, time and again, made their voices heard: Women should be able to make these deeply personal decisions without political interference,” Biden said.

“Yet Republicans in Congress and across the country continue to push to ban abortion nationwide, criminalize doctors and nurses, and make birth control more difficult to access. It is dangerous, extreme and out of character,” he added. I will continue to fight to protect a woman’s right to choose.

‘Congress should restore the protections of Roe v. Wade in federal law; it’s the only way we can fully guarantee a woman’s right to choose in every state.’

One tactic Democrats are looking to employ now that states can restrict abortion rights seemingly unchecked is to make sure all women have access to the abortion pill.

‘Since the day of the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, President Biden has stressed the need to protect access to mifepristone, a drug used in medical abortion that has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for more than 20 years and represents the majority of all abortions in the United States,’ noted a White House fact sheet.

The Presidential Memorandum announced that the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) along with the Attorney General and the Secretary of Homeland Security (DHS) will consider new guidance to support patients and providers, as well as pharmacies seeking to prescribe legally. or provide access to mifepristone.

This protection would apply to all women ‘no matter where they live’.

The second part of the memorandum is intended to ensure that those seeking the abortion pill can access it ‘free from threat or violence’.

“The President has long made it clear that people must have access to reproductive care without harassment, threats, or violence,” the White House fact sheet notes. “Pharmacies should not be treated differently.”
