Joe and Jill Biden release their 2022 tax returns to the public

President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden released their 2022 tax returns Tuesday night. The Bidens brought in $579,514 last year and paid a tax rate of 23.8 percent, paying $169,820 in federal, Delaware and Virginia income taxes. They gave about 3.5 percent of their income to charities – a sum of $20,180 – divided among 20 charities. The largest donation of $5,000 was to the Beau Biden Foundation, named after their late son. They also donated dollars to the National Fraternal Order of Police Foundation. And they donated money to their church, St. Joseph on the Brandywine, in Wilmington. Biden’s income has declined in recent years, with an income of $610,702 in 2021, Biden’s first year in office. In 2019, the Bidens reported nearly $1 million in revenue that year from book sales, speeches, and his teaching at the University of Pennsylvania and hers at Northern Virginia Community College. The presidential salary is set at $400,000, while Dr. Biden still teaches community college. She is the first first lady to hold a paid position in the White House. He commuted to and from Washington on Amtrak because he couldn’t afford to buy a home in the DC area. Former President Donald Trump broke with tradition and refused to disclose his tax returns while he was a candidate and while in office. Vice President Kamala Harris and Second Mr. Doug Emhoff reported $456,918 in 2022 income. They paid $93,570 in federal income tax, with a tax rate of 20.5 percent. They also paid $17,612 in California income taxes and Emhoff paid $9,697 to the District of Columbia, as he is employed at Georgetown University’s law school. In 2022, $23,000 was donated to charity by Harris and Emhoff, slightly more than the Bidens. The vice president’s salary is set at $235,100 per year.
