She touched on how she had “a lot of resistance” to becoming a mother and admitted that she always said that if she had children, she wanted to affirm them with the love she “felt she needed” from the outside world.
Jodie went on to say that her daughter, who is mixed race, was a sign from the universe to teach her lessons and heal her “own conversations about colorism.”
She detailed: ‘It’s interesting because I had a lot of resistance to becoming a mother and throughout my life, I always said that if I was going to have children, I wanted to have black babies, black babies so that I could affirm them as children with the love that I felt with that it needed to have been affirmed by the outside world.
Then I fell in love with my husband and we talked about having children.
“I had this mini pause, where I was like, ‘She’s going to be walking the world not just having an experience that I didn’t have, but looking like people that I’ve always felt a little bit tormented by, in a way.”
‘Now that I have this little, tiny, fair-skinned boss, I feel like it’s the universe teaching me lessons.
I have been given a daughter who looks like this to heal my own conversations about colorism.
Jodie continued: ‘I love this girl so much. She is so funny. It’s a big job preparing children for the world.
