Job ad by National Rental Inspections angers Australians

An Australian company has come under fire for a job advert saying it is looking for people over 40 who have a car, an iPad and a sense of humour.

National Rental Inspections, which is based in the Melbourne suburb of Doncaster, is looking for a rental property inspector and has some very specific requirements.

The company’s ad begins by saying ‘People over 40 are encouraged to apply’, which skirts age discrimination laws by not saying applicants must be over 40.

It then says applicants must ‘have a car that works, 96 per cent of the time, be able to pay to put gas in it (and) be willing to leave the suburbs where you live for work.’

The successful applicant will also be someone who is willing to listen, while you are talking you are not listening.

An Australian company has come under fire for a job opening saying it is looking for people over 40 who have a car, an iPad and a sense of humour.

“I know that, but it’s my job, so you have to be willing to listen and learn, I know everything already.”

The ad shows that it’s having a little fun with the application process while also saying that potential employees should ‘have a sense of humour’.

But not everyone got the joke, especially on the online chat site Reddit, where a post about the ad has sharply divided opinion.

The original poster wrote ‘WTF is this a joke?’, while another said ‘I definitely wouldn’t apply, what a huge red flag.’

A third commenter said National Rent Inspections ‘seem like a nightmare to work with’.

The job requires certain attributes that would be useful in any position, such as ‘Being good with people.

“My customers are very important to me, so it would be nice if you were nice to them.”

But there are also some preferences that would exclude many people, such as “Most importantly, these are not school hours.”

“However it’s suitable for mums, dads, people without kids (lucky you!) as we can work around your family but you can’t have 3 months off at Christmas and 2 weeks off every other month for the school holidays .”

Company director Michael Uspensky said he worded the ad to make it stand out so he could get the best possible applicants.

“All ads look the same, you have to look different and people are sick of being treated like a number,” he said. Yahoo Australia.

“And I’ve had so many people say ‘we applied for this job because of your ad.’

Mr Uspensky said he wants to hire ‘someone with a sense of humour, because in our business, we’re doing inspections at tenants’ places, so we want to get in there, be happy and just treat the tenants with respect and have a little smile and keep it casual’.

Although some were not amused by his ad, many commenters liked that the ad was honest about the type of person they were looking for.

One said the company should ‘get fed up with idiots in the past, I love this ad’.

Another wrote that “It’s funny, the employer definitely has a sense of humor,” and a third said “at least they’re making any expectations clear from the start.”

The ad acknowledges that some may not find it funny by adding “We’re actually really great to work with/for and have a great team, but we’re just growing and need more inspectors.”

The company director said he prefers people over 40 because they have ‘more life skills for work’ and that the comments about children were ‘just a bit of fun’.

“If people want to think I’m discriminating, it’s not for them, not because they have children, because they don’t have a sense of humor,” he said.
