JK Rowling criticizes Australian non-binary activist Deni Todorovič for comments about public toilets
JK Rowling appears to be criticizing an Australian non-binary activist after they opened up about the dilemma of choosing between a male or female public bathroom.
Deni Todorovič, who recently made headlines while modeling for swimwear brand Seafolly, appeared Monday night on ABC’s Q&A, where she discussed the challenges facing transgender and non-binary people.
The podcast’s author and host explained that the process of choosing a bathroom at a public event can be complicated and even dangerous for the trans community.
A clip of Todorovič’s performance on Q&A was shared on Twitter by London-based documentary filmmaker Malcolm Clark, who describes himself as a campaigner “against gender ideology.”
Mr Clark took aim at the activist, saying that ‘some gay rights are destroying all our reputations’.
Ms Rowling then re-shared Mr Clark’s Twitter post with a spool of thread emoji. The emoji is used to direct Twitter users to someone else’s tweet as a sign of support.
While appearing on Q&A, Todorovič explained that there were issues with transgender people using both female and male toilets.
“When I’m at the Super Bowl, Rihanna’s concert, and I have to pee and I’m in the shoes of 10-inch Manolo Blahnik, I have to think ‘where am I going?'” they said.
‘To the boys’ toilets? I have a penis so that’s where I should go biologically, but when I go there I get scolded at the urinal.
“If I go to the booth, the guard will think I’m doing things I shouldn’t be doing there. So then I think: ‘yes, I’m going to the girls’ toilets’.
“But then when I go to the girls’ toilets, what if there’s a little girl in it, what if her mom thinks I’m a pedo? Because that’s what the neo-Nazis said.’

JK Rowling shared another tweet criticizing Todorovic’s comments on Q&A
Ms. Rowling has come under fire for her views on gender before, leading many Harry Potter stars such as Watson and Daniel Radcliffe to distance themselves from the author.

After Todorovič’s appearance, Mr. Clark went on a lengthy rant wondering how women can feel safe in female bathrooms if they were available to non-binary people.
Deni Todorovic said it was dangerous for ‘them’ to use a men’s toilet. But if it’s dangerous for Deni to be in a bathroom with men, how much more dangerous is it…for women?’ he tweeted.
‘Deni – with mustache and penis – wants to escape the violence of a minority of men by letting women into spaces. But this means that NO man – no matter how violent – could be kept out, because who could decide which mustache and penis are ‘really’ non-binary or trans?’
“If gays want to change men’s spaces, they are free to campaign for it.
“The fact that some are now focusing on removing the protections from women puts us at odds with 51% of the population and the majority of straight men who support women and girls’ need for security. It’s a horrible look.’
Todorovič got wind of Mr Clark’s post and Ms Rowling’s subsequent response, and launched their own fiery response riddled with references to Harry Potter.
“NO JK DOES NOT REALIZE SHE IS THE BOGGART,” they wrote on Instagram with a screenshot of the post.
An Boggart in the fictional series is a shape-shifting creature that can become a person’s worst fear.
“Maybe Rowling should face her own closet boggarts instead of trying to portray people as dementors,” they continued.
‘PS JK in the UK Transgender people are 53% more likely to commit suicide. That said, these comments give Voldemort.”
Todorovič then tagged actress Emma Watson and told her “we need your elitist transgender support now more than ever.”
Watson has stood up for the trans community on several occasions, saying they “deserve to live their lives without being constantly questioned.”
