Jimmy Carter, 99, reveals his dying wish from hospice: ‘I’m trying to make it’

Former President Jimmy Carter has announced that he hopes to live long enough to vote for Kamala Harris in November.

The 99-year-old shared his final wish from his home in Georgia, where he is receiving terminal care.

“I’m just trying to vote for Kamala Harris,” Carter told his son Chip, his grandson Jason Carter told the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Carter turns 100 on October 1, a few days before Harris faces Donald Trump in the presidential election.

Jason Carter said his grandfather has been “more alert and interested in politics and the war in Gaza” in recent days.

He had previously said the 39th president was “no longer awake every day” while receiving hospice care.

Carter, however, remains hopeful that he will make it to the polls. Early voting in George begins on October 15, two weeks after the former president’s birthday.

The Democrat is the oldest living former president and was in power from 1977 to 1981.

His family announced in February 2023 that he had been admitted to hospice care, and many assumed this meant he was near death.

He has been receiving terminal care at his Plains home for 17 months, while also mourning the passing of his beloved wife of 77 years, Rosalynn.

The former president was last seen at her funeral in Georgia last November.

Rosalynn Carter died on November 19 at the age of 96. She and Carter were the longest-married presidential couple.

They met when the former president was just three years old and Rosalynn was just born. On July 7, 2023, they celebrated their 77th wedding anniversary.

The couple were together their entire lives and their romance stood the test of time, as well as the challenges of Navy deployments, a presidential campaign and his subsequent time in office.

After his presidency, Jimmy was completely devoted to his wife.

Together they carried out humanitarian projects and helped build or renovate more than 4,300 affordable homes around the world, one of the largest charitable achievements by a former president.

In 2022, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in finding solutions to global conflicts.

Last month, his representatives were forced to deny he had died after a fake letter was posted to X.
