Jimmy Barnes shares health update following open heart surgery

Jimmy Barnes announced some great health news on Wednesday when he revealed that he is currently recovering in intensive care following his heart surgery.

The rock legend, 67, was recently rushed to the emergency room after the bacterial pneumonia he contracted two weeks ago worsened his condition.

After undergoing open heart surgery, the musician took to his Instagram to let his followers know that he is healthy, happy and likely to make a full recovery.

His wife Jane posted on his behalf as she lay next to him in the hospital bed, writing: 'Hello, this is Jane Barnes. Sharing a few photos from earlier this morning.

“I'm happy to let you know that our Jimmy made it through surgery and is now recovering in intensive care.”

She continued, “We are so grateful for the amazing medical team caring for him. Thanks for all the love and support. I'll keep you all informed.'

Just hours earlier, the Scottish-born Australian informed his followers that he was undergoing open-heart surgery after a bacterial infection spread to his heart.

Late last month, Jimmy was forced to cancel his headlining performance at the Rock the Boat cruise festival in Noumea, New Caledonia, after being hospitalized with bacterial pneumonia.

He was subsequently forced to withdraw from his scheduled performance at By The C in Torquay on 2 December after his condition failed to improve.

Jimmy has booked a series of sold-out headlining gigs for January and February, including multiple shows at the Red Hot Summer Tour festival.

However, Jimmy confirmed on Wednesday that his upcoming shows will likely be halted after doctors discovered his infection had spread.

Jimmy wrote in a statement: 'Unfortunately, I received some bad news late yesterday…despite everyone's best efforts, the bacterial infection I have been battling for the past two weeks has apparently now spread to my heart.

'It has infected an otherwise healthy valve that was replaced several years ago due to a birth defect, so I will have open heart surgery in the next few hours to clear this infection and insert a clean valve.

He went on to express his frustration and shock at the diagnosis, writing, “Obviously this is going to sideline me for a while. I know a lot of other people are struggling with even worse things, but it still feels incredibly frustrating. Just a few weeks ago I was the fittest I've been in decades!

“Anyway, as I hope you can imagine, this has all happened very suddenly, so it will be a few days before everyone finds out what's possible with my upcoming shows.”
