Jim Carrey reveals the reason he took role in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 after previously announcing his retirement

Jim Carrey has candidly revealed the reason he took on a role in new film Sonic the Hedgehog 3 – after previously announcing his retirement.

The actor, 62, said in 2022 that he would no longer make films and claimed Sonic 2 was his last project.

But in February this year it was announced that the star – thought to be worth £160million – would return for the third film, which also stars Ben Schwartz, Idris Elba, Keanu Reeves and Colleen O’Shaughnessey.

Speaking on the red carpet last night, an Associated Press interviewer told him, “You said in a previous interview that you would come back if you were given a script, written in golden ink, written by angels…? ‘

As he started laughing he replied, “That may have been an exaggeration, yes. I came back to this universe because I get to play a genius, which is a bit complicated.

“And you know, I bought a lot of stuff and honestly, I need the money.”

The star is known for his roles in The Mask, The Grinch and Dumb and Dumber.

In 2022, he said of leaving acting behind, “Well, I’m retiring. Yes, probably. I’m pretty serious.

“I really love my quiet life and I really love putting paint to canvas and I really love my spiritual life and I feel like – and this is something you may never hear another celebrity say as long as the time exists – I have enough. I’ve done enough. I am enough’

The Sonic series has been one of the most lucrative projects of his career, with the first two films grossing a combined $725 million (£568 million) worldwide.

Sonic The Hedgehog is back on the big screen with another hair-raising adventure to unwrap just in time for Christmas.

It sees the return of everyone’s favorite blue hedgehog, along with his trusty sidekicks, Knuckles and Tails, as the dynamic trio embark on their most exciting adventure yet.

This time, Team Sonic reunites against the mysterious villain Shadow, who has been in a state of suspended animation for decades but is now about to be unleashed – and yes, he wants revenge.

Shadow’s impressive array of superpowers – including teleportation and awesome strength – could not only defeat Sonic and his friends, but could also threaten the future of the planet.

But in February this year it was announced that the star – believed to be worth £160million – would return for the third film.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is once again led by an all-star cast, with fan favorite Ben taking on the role of Sonic for the third time.

The American funnyman brings Sonic to life with his impeccable comedic timing and extraordinary voice.

In May of this year, Jim lowered the price of his Los Angeles estate for the third time since he put the property up for sale over a year earlier.

The comedian has lived in the 12,000-square-foot home for more than 30 years and first put his home on the market in February 2023 for a ticket price of a whopping $28.9 million.

Two months after putting the property on the market, he lowered the price to $27 million, and in October 2023, he lowered that number to $24 million.

And in May 2024, the Truman Show actor dropped the price to $21.9 million, bringing the total cut to $7 million.

Despite the huge price reduction, he bought the house thirty years ago for $3.8 million and will still take home a significant profit.

He bought the lavish estate, which features a tennis court and infrared sauna, in 1994.

When he first put his house up for sale in February, he said The New York Post that he was ready for ‘changes’ in his life.

“For thirty years it has been a sanctuary for me, but I don’t spend much time there now and I want someone else to enjoy it as much as I do,” he told the outlet in a statement.

‘Cha cha cha cha… Changes!’ he added while referencing David Bowie’s iconic song.

He also told this earlier The Wall Street Journal that the house was for him “a place of enchantment and inspiration” for more than “30 highly creative and prosperous years.”

“Every night the owls sang me lullabies and every morning I sipped my cup of coffee with the hawks and hummingbirds, under a giant grandfather pine,” he said.

The one-story single-family home is located in the upscale Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles and features five bedrooms, six bathrooms, and three half-baths.

The Mask alum also enjoyed playing on the tennis court, swimming in the waterfall pool and meditating on an outdoor platform in the treetops on the spacious grounds, which span over two acres.
