Aussie teens pay the price for avoiding overweight baggage fees by carrying almost every item in their suitcases
- Teenagers flew to Adelaide
- Filmed attempts to avoid too much hand luggage
- Jetstar says it has limits to make it fair for everyone
Two Australian teenagers have paid the price for their cunning attempt to evade overweight baggage fees while flying home from a girls’ weekend away.
University student Adriana Ocampo and her friend Emily Altamura, both 19, were flying Jetstar from Melbourne to Adelaide when they realized their hand luggage was almost twice the airline’s 7kg per bag limit.
Footage from the hilarious ordeal shows the women opening their bags in the airport terminal and putting on as many layers of clothing as possible to avoid the $65 fee.
“We didn’t know what to expect,” the video’s caption reads.
The two women were hysterical as they filmed their extreme measures to get their bags under the weight limit.
Ms. Ocampo piled as many as 15 items of clothing – most of her suitcase contents.
It included an iPad tucked into her trouser pockets, leaving the pair in stitches as she drew strange looks from other travelers.

But their efforts were to no avail as the pair conceded defeat.
Ms. Ocampo’s suitcase was still over the limit after putting on 5.5 kg of layers.
The video ends with Mrs. Ocampo sweating on the plane during the 80-minute flight home, resembling Augustus Gloop from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
“We finally paid the fine,” the final caption read.
The women also revealed that their flight was previously canceled, adding to the nightmare of the trip.
Ms Ocampo admitted she knew her bag was too heavy before she arrived at the airport.
“We thought the only way we could take the weight off our bags was to put it on ourselves, so we started putting on our coats and coats, but we were still over the limit,” she told the British media.
‘I looked like a bear. I’m short and petite and I looked the opposite. It reminded me of the boy from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.’
“I only had a few things left in my luggage, like two pairs of shoes, a purse, a pair of jeans and a pair of socks. We crossed again and were the only people at the gate.’

The pair saw the funny side of the ordeal, despite each being out of pocket.
“Everyone in line was staring at us and laughing at us, it was kind of embarrassing. People were annoyed that we stopped the plane,” Ms. Ocampo recalls.
The airline also saw the funny side of the incident and emphasized safety requirements.
“While we certainly see the funny side of it, we have cabin baggage limits to make it fair for everyone,” said an airline spokeswoman.
‘By keeping track of how much luggage passengers take on board, everyone has room for their belongings and we meet our safety requirements.’
Daily Mail Australia has contacted Jetstar for further comment.

The video has divided the internet since it went viral.
“It doesn’t make any sense since all that weight is still being carried on the plane,” one viewer commented.
Others shared their own sneaky tactics to evade the fee.
“I fly Jetstar a lot and I never worry about this. I always hide my 2kg laptop under a coat on the floor when they come by for a weigh-in,” one woman commented.
Another viewer added, “The trick is to watch them one by one, get a bunch of stuff out of the bag, leave it with your friend, get weighed and get the ticket, and then just do everything put it back in!’
