Former second-round draft pick Denzel Mims is ready to move on from the team that drafted him, publicly declaring a trade request on Twitter on Thursday.

After multiple challengers for playing time have been drafted and acquired by the New York Jets, Mims no longer feels there’s a place for him in the team according to his agent, Ron Slavin (via NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport).

‘It’s just time. Denzel tried in good faith but it’s clear he does not have a future with the Jets,’ Slavin said in a statement.

‘Denzel vowed to come back better than ever this season and worked extremely hard in the offseason to make that happen. Still, he has been given no opportunities with the starting offense to get in a groove with them.

‘We feel at this point a trade is our only option, since the Jets have told us repeatedly they will not release him. Joe Douglas has always done right by Denzel and we trust he will do everything in his power to find another team where Denzel can be a contributor.’

Mims was drafted 59th overall in the 2nd round of the 2020 NFL Draft out of Baylor, playing in nine games as a rookie.

In that time, he caught 23 passes on 44 targets for 357 yards, but in the offseason, the entire coaching staff that drafted him was fired.

After being drafted, the Jets signed Corey Davis in free agency and drafted Elijah Moore out of Ole Miss and Garrett Wilson out of Ohio State.

Mims only managed eight catches on 23 targets last season for 133 yards, last making a catch on December 12th in a game against Philadelphia.

During this preseason, Mims has made minimal contributions. He has a total of five catches on nine targets for 68 total yards.
