Jets star slammed by Aaron Rodgers breaks silence after QB’s public criticism before Davante Adams trade

New York Jets wide receiver Mike Williams was back in practice and broke his silence Friday after being called out by his quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, for what the 40-year-old thought was a game-deciding foul.

The diss, combined with Tuesday’s trade for Davante Adams, put Williams in a precarious position and only made matters worse that he skipped Wednesday and Thursday’s practices for “personal reasons.”

Williams appeared to make a crucial mistake in the final seconds of the game against the Bills – when he ran the wrong route and slipped, leading to a costly interception that sealed a victory for Buffalo.

Less than 12 hours later, New York acquired Adams, who played with Rodgers in Green Bay and usurped Williams on the depth chart.

Rumors swirled of a trade for Williams in a busier Jets roster that received wide receivers, but his message on Friday wasn’t one of anger at his situation or toward Rodgers.

Williams said he wasn’t upset with Rodgers’ public criticism of him: “No, I just have to stay on the red line,” he continued about taking the right route.

The old Charger also denied that he wasn’t 100 percent healthy this week. Williams added that Rodgers contacted him immediately after criticizing him.

‘Yes. We all watched film, we all went through it and made corrections,” Williams continued.

Williams also has to compete in the Jets wide receivers room against Allen Lazard and Garrett Wilson, both of whom have more experience playing with Rodgers than he does.

β€œIt’s still building, day by day, practice by practice, game by game.”

Williams and Rodgers will get more opportunities to build that chemistry on Sunday night when the Jets face the Steelers.
