The film explores the gripping true story of the “reign of terror” that killed two dozen Indians.

It is set in the 1920s revolves around the FBI’s investigation into a series of murders after several members of the Oklahoma Osage tribe were slaughtered.

Jesse plays the role of Texas Ranger Tom White, who investigated the deaths of tribesmen who subsequently perished oil was discovered under their land.

The rich deposits provided the tribe with more than $30 million in annual revenue at the height of the boom, according to the Oklahoma Historical Association.

The mineral deposits provided royalties paid to the tribe as a whole—with each allottee receiving an equal share, known as a headright that outsiders could legally obtain only if they married into the tribe.

It was at this time that farmer William K. Hale (De Niro), a native of Greenville, Texas, encouraged his subservient cousin Ernest Burkhart (DiCaprio) to marry Osage member Mollie Kyle (later Mollie Burkhart).

The plot of the film revolves around Hale convincing his strong-willed cousin Burkhart to marry one of the daughters in the tribe in a plot to eventually kill them and inherit their wealth from oil.
