Marsch has told the south coast club he is willing to take the job, following talks on Monday that put the former Leeds boss on track for what would be a speedy return to the Premier League if his appointment goes through.
Marsch is available after leaving Leeds last week, has top-flight experience and also successfully kept the Yorkshire club going last season, a job he would be tasked with repeating at St Mary’s.
Southampton are currently bottom of the Premier League, four points from safety.
Marsch is also seen as a good fit for Southampton, having been part of the Red Bull setup they admire at New York Red Bulls and Red Bull Salzburg before following in the footsteps of previous St Mary’s manager Ralph Hasenhüttl at RB Leipzig.

Marsch has been on Southampton’s radar before and is understood to have confirmed his positive impressions of him in his discussions with the club.
While talks continued with a view to reaching a solution, one issue that needed to be resolved was a win-win contract agreement, although the current situation in Southampton has not deterred Marsch.
Southampton travel to Chelsea on Saturday before a trip to Marsch’s old club Leeds a week later.
Southampton were open to manager Ruben Selles remaining in charge at short notice but could now be led by Marsch at Stamford Bridge if a deal can be struck in time.
