Former Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard scored his first goal for FC Seoul in a 2-0 win over Gangwon in South Korea’s K League 1 on Wednesday.

The 31-year-old converted a penalty to give his side the lead in the 56th minute before teammate Ryu Jae-moon recorded Seoul’s second win in four days.

This was Lingard’s 10th appearance for Seoul after arriving on a free transfer in early February.

The 67,000-seater Seoul World Cup stadium was barely half full but there was a lot of noise in the ground after Lingard’s penalty hit the net.

As well as the sound of fans cheering, several fireworks were released behind the goal as Lingard celebrated with the rest of the team.

Prior to Wednesday, Lingard had not scored a league goal since September 2021, when he netted a late winner for Manchester United at West Ham.

Lingard – who previously scored nine goals in 16 Premier League games during a loan spell with the Hammers – then spent the 2022-23 season at Nottingham Forest.

He scored two goals for Forest – against Tottenham and Blackburn – but both came in the EFL Cup.

Lingard’s first goal for Seoul came almost six years to the day since he scored for England in a 6-1 win over Panama at the 2016 World Cup.

He represented the Three Lions 32 times between 2016 and 2021, scoring a total of six goals.
