“There was a lot I had to fight for, and recovery was just a one-way street in my mind. My recovery became a relief for me because I knew I could provide relief to my family, my daughter, and everyone I truly affected. And my poor cousin, who was with me that day, gave him images that he can never see again, but I know that my healing would be healing for him,” Renner said.
“With that, I never thought about my own physical ailments, my own pain, or my own fear. I had so many things to fight for, so the one-way road to recovery was my mental attitude, and that attitude was always about getting better. There is no other option than that. And I still work every day, and I thank God that I have a lot to fight for,” he added.
Renner had been using a Snowcat plow to help his adult cousin, Alexander Fries, pull his car out of deep snow when he jumped out and forgot to set the emergency brake.
The plow began rolling toward his cousin and the actor allegedly tried to get back into the snowplow while it was moving in an attempt to stop it, but instead he was pulled under it and crushed.
Renner made his first red carpet appearance in April when he attended the premiere of his Disney+ series Rennervations.
The actor also spoke on CNN about his new music, released one year ago on Monday, which documents his past year.
Renner said music was healing for him and the project was a “diary entry” of sorts.
“It was healing for all the people I wrote it with, all my friends. My whole recovery has been where the better I got, the better everyone else got. The music also became a story about that. I'm so happy to be able to do this,” Renner said.
