Jeremy Renner reveals Anthony Mackie supported him in the hospital after snowplow accident
Jeremy Renner had the support of a close friend during his hospital recovery after being crushed by a seven-ton snowplow.
The actor, 52, revealed his Hurt Locker co-star and fellow Avengers cast member, Anthony Mackie, 44, was right there alongside him, in a new interview with Diane Sawyer that aired on ABC Thursday.
“It’s the actions,” Renner said after Sawyer, 77, asked him about “the best thing anyone said to you” after the accident.
“Mackie was right there at my bedside in Reno,” the Marvel star shared, as the broadcast showed tributes from his other co-stars Evangeline Lilly, Chris Evans, and Chris Pratt.
Renner suffered 30 broken bones, a collapsed lung and had his liver punctured by a shattered rib in the horrific, fatal accident on New Year’s Day.

The duo co-starred in the 2008 Oscar-winning film – directed by Kathryn Bigelow – starring Renner as Sergeant First Class William James, and Mackie as Sergeant JT Sanborn.
The two will also appear in the Disney+ docuseries Rennervations, which focuses on Renner’s own local community in Reno, Nevada.
Rennervations was filmed in 2022 and production was ready before the accident.
Rennervations, which premieres April 12, revolves around the Hawkeye star as he enlists his famous friends to repurpose vehicles that can serve communities.
In addition to Mackie, Vanessa Hudgens (High School Musical), Anil Kapoor (Mission Impossible) and Sebastián Yatra (Encanto) will also be featured.
Renner and Mackie are also fellow Avengers, with Renner playing Clint Barton/Hawkeye and Mackie playing Sam Wilson/Falcon.
During the interview, Renner showed Sawyer that he still has his Avengers tattoo on his neck.
Another Hurt Locker and Avenger co-star Renner has supported is actress Evangeline Lilly – who plays Hope van Dyne/Wasp in the Marvel Universe, and who starred as Renner’s ex-wife Connie in the war movie.

Lilly, 43, previously told Access in February that the actor “has recovered like a mo-fo” just over a month after the accident.
“I walked into his house and I got goosebumps thinking, ‘Why are you mobile? Why are you mobile? What’s happening?’ I expected to sit next to his bed and hold his hand as he groaned and groaned in pain and was unable to move,” she said.
“He drove himself around, laughing with his friends. It’s a miracle, a real miracle.’
Elsewhere in the interview, Renner reflected on his existence, wondering if he would be “just a spine and a brain” after his injury, signing “I’m sorry” for his family sitting by his side as he recovered.
Renner had been using a Snowcat plow to try to help his adult cousin, Alexander Fries, pull his car out of the deep snow when he jumped out, forgetting to apply the emergency brake.
The plow started running towards his cousin and the actor allegedly tried to get back into the snow plow as it came in in an attempt to stop it. Then he was pulled under and crushed.
While sitting in his wheelchair talking to ABC’s Diane Sawyer, Renner held back tears as he revealed the moments in the hospital when he couldn’t even talk to his loving family who desperately wanted him to survive the accident.
“I gestured I’m sorry, because I’m sorry,” he said before talking about how his mother never left his side.

“I refuse to let that memory haunt me, that’s how I talk to my family about it, all their perspectives, which are chilling.”
