Negative reaction: Clarkson wrote that he ‘hated’ the Duchess of Sussex (pictured with Prince Harry) and wanted to see her parade naked through the streets while people pelted her with ‘excrement’
More than 10 television personalities are currently vying for the position, according to the latest odds from William Hill.
But Clarkson took to Twitter on Wednesday night to deny the claims, writing: “I have not been fired as the host of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.”
The former Top Gear presenter sparked backlash after fantasizing in a newspaper column that the Duchess of Sussex was paraded naked through the streets while people pelted her with “excrement”, in an apparent reference to a scene of public shaming from fantasy television series Game of Thrones.
It prompted press watchdog IPSO to investigate the column and sparked speculation that Clarkson’s hit shows on Amazon Prime had been pulled after heads of the streaming service were reportedly left ‘incandescent’.
His fans then feared he would be “cancelled” after ITV could not confirm whether or not he would continue as the presenter of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?
ITV boss Carolyn McCall, who Piers Morgan previously claimed forced him out of Good Morning Britain, appeared to confirm that Clarkson will not continue in his role beyond the next series, which has already been recorded.
We have a contract. We are hired for this [season]so we’ll do that,’ Ms McCall told Variety magazine, adding: “And then we have no future engagements.”
Speaking of Clarkson’s column on Meghan, he added: “We don’t endorse that in any way… there’s no place for it on ITV.”
An ITV spokesperson told MailOnline today: ‘As we’ve said before, ITV have an additional series of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? contractually commissioned (which you have now registered), and there are no further commissioning commitments beyond the current ones.’
But the network later issued a revised statement, which read: ‘As we have said for several weeks, ITV is contractually committed to a further series of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? (which has now been recorded).
“There are no further commissioning commitments beyond the current ones, as is typical in these programs where we make series-by-series commissioning decisions.
‘So, for the avoidance of doubt, who wants to be a millionaire? nor Jeremy Clarkson have been cancelled.’
Clarkson tweeted shortly after: “So many kind messages about today’s reports. But relax. Lisa and I haven’t broken up and I haven’t been fired as the host of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.
