Jeremy Clarkson slams Meghan Markle again over ‘stupid and unroyal’ A-list baby shower held before giving birth to Archie

Jeremy Clarkson has again criticised Meghan Markle for the “dumb” and “unroyal” baby shower she threw ahead of Archie’s birth.

The 43-year-old Duchess of Sussex flew to New York by private jet for a baby shower with her closest friends, ahead of the birth of her eldest child Archie.

In his column for The Sunday Times, Clarkson criticised both the event and Meghan’s use of a private jet, but admitted he had also had a penchant for the elaborate mode of travel in the past.

“The Duchess of Sussex was criticized for taking a private jet to attend her baby shower in New York. And not just because a baby shower is a stupid, unroyal thing to do,” Clarkson wrote.

Meghan’s baby shower in February 2019 was criticised by the Queen’s spokesman Dickie Arbiter, who claimed the celebration was more of an American tradition and went against British royal customs.

Mr. Arbiter told US Weekly: ‘Baby showers, that’s a very American thing. We don’t do that here in the UK.’

He added: ‘It was a bit over the top in terms of cost and the way she got there. Meghan is American and she does things the American way.’

However, it was previously reported that Meghan was not the first royal to be the center of attention at a baby shower. The Princess of Wales celebrated the party years before Meghan.

Before the birth of William and Kate’s eldest child George in 2013, the princess had a baby shower thrown by her sister Pippa Middleton, which reportedly got permission from the Queen.

The private jet Meghan used to get to New York was provided to her by George and Amal Clooney, it was reported.

The lavish baby shower was held for the Duchess in the exclusive penthouse suite at The Marks, where the price per night is £57,000.

Guests included famed tennis star Serena Williams, Meghan’s former ‘Suits’ colleague Abigail Spencer and human rights lawyer Amal Clooney.

Former Top Gear presenter Clarkson previously faced criticism for comments he made about Meghan in a 2022 column for The Sun.

‘I hate her. Not like I hate her. [Scottish First Minister] Nicola Steur or [English serial killer’ Rose West. I hate her on a cellular level,’ Clarkson wrote in the column.

In another section of the since-deleted article, Clarkson referenced a famous scene from Game of Thrones, and wrote: ‘At night, I’m unable to sleep as I lie there, grinding my teeth and dreaming of the day when she is made to parade naked through the streets of every town in Britain while the crowds chant, ‘Shame!’ and throw lumps of excrement at her.’

Thousands of readers, a handful of political figures and even Clarkson’s daughter said he went too far.

Clarkson issued an apology to Harry and Meghan following the column, in which he said: ‘So I’m going to try and buck the trend this morning with an apology for the things I said in a Sun column recently about Meghan Markle. I really am sorry. All the way from the balls of my feet to the follicles on my head. This is me putting my hands up.’
